Over half a century ago, a young starving artist named Howard Scott suffered from Iritis, (inflammation of the iris) as he painted at night by a bare light bulb suspended from the ceiling. He pledged that someday he would do something about the dreadful lighting conditions.

In 1956 Scott founded Verilux, Inc. (Latin for "True Light".) A former Munsell® Color Engineer and famous billboard graphic artist, his mission for Verilux was to manufacture and sell the perfect daylight source. Scott experimented with rare earth phosphers and succeeded by inventing near perfect daylight indoors with his patented true color light fluorescent formula - Trucolite®.

Today, the original philosophies and founding principles have not changed. Bright indoor lighting created a cultural revolution when it first appeared. Suddenly, you could do things indoors, generally restricted to daylight hours. While this light was bright, researchers later found out that it wasn’t a very good simulation of natural sunlight, and in fact certain light frequencies were lacking. These discoveries led to a “second generation” of lighting, one that used light frequencies that were the same as sunlight. Standard lighting actually appears yellow when compared to natural spectrum lighting.
