Binaural Beat Technology
|
Binaural beat technology (BBT) is the use of sound recordings to alter brainwaves. Binaural beats result from the
interaction of two different auditory impulses, originating in opposite ears.
Considered auditory brainstem responses, binaural
beats originate in the superior olivary nucleus of each hemisphere at very low frequencies. They can not be heard in the ordinary
sense of the word because the human range of hearing is higher (from 20-20,000 Hz). Instead, it is perceived as an inaudible auditory beat.
BBT affects brainwaves that in turn correspond to specific mental states. The following are the brainwaves
involved with BBT.
- Beta waves. The fastest waves, usually found during our waking state, associated with awareness, engaged mind,
arousal, also present with fear, anger, worry, hunger, and surprise.
- Alpha waves. Associated with relaxation, tranquil state of consciousness, less engagement and arousal, pleasant
inward awareness, present during meditation and states of relaxation.
- Theta waves. Connected with increased recall, creativity, visualization, future planning, inspiration, drowsiness,
present during dreaming and REM states.
- Delta waves. Associated with deep dreamless sleep, deep trance state, pituitary release of growth hormone,
self-healing, present during deep levels of non-REM sleep.
BBT is also used in psychology to create altered states of consciousness by providing a wide range of
beneficial effects, such as relaxation and expanded learning. This area of practice has been championed
by the Monroe Institute, a research organization dedicated to the exploration of human consciousness.
